It seems pretty obvious to me that without the initial invention known as the computer, connecting globally (in a similar format) would have been years yet into the future alternatively.

The birth of internet connecting ability certainly has become the major reason for the computers use and popularity,,,although I still enjoy it as a typewriter with a monitor and spell check, as well.

The issue now has become an exponential one, and can only continue to advance, expand, and gather more of humaity.

The computer is the greater advancement. You need it to access the internet. But the computer will also perform many tasks without the internet, such as: word processing, accounting, spreadsheets. data bases, math calculations and bookkeeping. Our modern banking systems would be much less convenient without computers. The Social Secirity system could hardly function without computers. Libraries (as sources of information) were here long before the internet. My Elementary, High School and College libraries functioned before computers became available (1933-1947).

The Internet and mobile telephony will quite possibly turn out to be retrograde steps in years to come if education and creative thought are killed off as a result of their dominance of our lives.
The computer is a tool and a concept that could be used for anything including Internet and largely rubbish communications so has/had more potential for advancement.

It has to be the computer. If you did not have the computer, then you could not have the internet. At least not in the form we know it to be.
