The cutest costume is one that the child is happy wearing. If a young child does not like what they are wearing it will show.
Try on several costumes and see what the child's reaction is to them.
I really wanted my son to be a dinosaur one year but he hated it... His choice was a Bumble Bee and he loved it. The best thing was that he smiled and made "Buzzing" sounds.

How about a baby Jesus? Just put him in a wheelbarrow made up to looka lika manger. Borrow a horse (camel), sheep and a few people with the last name of Wisemen and you're set! (Gather some kids who want to be an angel or carry a long stick with a flashlight attached to the top for a star. Get a girl of about age 12 to be Mary, and a guy of about 30 to be Joseph and everybody can go around as one big group!)

Pumpkin
They are both roundish and lumpy.
Plus when their head sticks up out of the pumpkin with the little round bit of pumpkin on their head, it's great!
This plush costume has been redone many times.
