Regicide means the killing of a king, or one who kills a king. The term is derived from Latin word rex meaning "king" + caedere meaning "to kill".

In a broad sense it is defined as the deliberate killing of a monarch, or the person responsible for it. In a narrower sense, in the British tradition, it refers to the judicial execution of a king after alleged due process of law.

The regicide of Mary Queen of Scots and Charles I of England are amongst the well known regicides.In modern culture regicide exist in chess games.
