I think I know the answer but would like to hear what others think.

Remember when voices were provided by people that you never heard of and didn't really care who they were as long as you could understand what they were saying.

I think Robin Williams, who was great in Alladin is when it really what got the ball rolling. The problem is the really great voice actors are losing work to so so celebrity voices. The trend will stop when people realize the production is harmed by stunt casting.

I think it started to gain momentum with foreign films coming into the US market. Studios wanted to make them a sure-fire hit with home video purchasers, so having famous voices like Patrick Stewart, Ray Romano, Queen Latifah, Matt Damon etc. was seen as a big plus. I for one would rather the lifelong professional voice actors do these gigs- Hollywood heavyweights have their own pool to splash in...

Actually, as you point out, it is not necessary for 'STARS' to provide the voices for animations.

But, some directors feel their work needs a little help to prop up the sales of their product.

And we need something for these poor actors to do to keep them off the streets and out of trouble.

Animation has become so much more sophisticated now, they actually copy the actors doing the voices in a lot of cases. Can you imagine any other actor doing the voice of the donkey in Shrek besides Eddie Murphy after watching it? It wasn't the donkey who was acting. It was Eddie!

I think it adds to the movie when you know who is doing the voices.James Earl Jones as Mufasa in The Lion King was very credible in my opinion. I can picture him as the king of beasts with his booming voice.
