I am Pagan and Halloween is very much for me a religious holiday. Though many of the so-called traditions of today are new inventions only dating the last couple hundred years, people did celebrate a sort of harvest time, where they would bring in their animals for the winter.
During that celebration, it was thought that the door between worlds was thin. This allowed other spirits to come through. Some good, some bad.
There are some cultures that have dumb feasts on Halloween - eating in silence with places and food set out for their dearly departed. My family and I take part in this tradition.
Though it is not Halloween they celebrated, the ancient Egyptians also revered the dead, and would hold feasts - "The Feast of the Valley" as per Paul Johnson's The Civilization of Ancient Egypt.
I think for most people, by and large, the holiday is just another excuse to get drunk, act petty, disagree. But there are many of us (myself included) that celebrate the Holiday with reverence.

Well, it got exaggerated as time past.
It started out as Samhain, which means the end of summer. It's the end of the agricultural season and the beginning of the Celtic Year and a festival for he dead. A long time ago, this was when the animals were butchered for food for the winter. Because of this and days becoming shorter, the concept of death was noticed and recognize even more. It was supposed to be a night where the dead could be contacted because the two worlds were closer. They don't want to do that for evil purposes or for bad intentions. . Somehow, along the way, it became known as a night of monsters, evil beings and so forth.
Now, as to what I celebrate it for...hum, that's a good question. My kid's dad died on Halloween, so I guess it' a night of reflection for me....

Halloween, holiday observed on the evening of October 31 in most areas of North America and in some areas of Western Europe. The holiday is symbolically associated with death and the supernatural. Halloween falls on the eve of All Saints' Day, also known as Allhallows or Hallowmas, a holy day in the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches. Originally a pagan festival of the dead, All Saints' Day was established by the Catholic Church in the 9th century to honor Christian saints. All Souls' Day, a holy day established by the Catholic Church in the 10th century, is also closely linked to Halloween. All Souls' Day, on November 2, is observed to help purify the spirits of the dead.

Well Halloween is a festival own it's own. It gives me great pleasure to hand out treats to little ankle biters and see joy...and when they come home with their treasure's..the bags full of goodies. Further more what I would like to see is that the little trick'n treaters be given a day off from school after the Halloween is over. It can easily be done,...by the schools to schedule a Pro-D day to give them a break.

"We" don't celebrate it. It is a con by candy companies. It originally was All Hallows Eve. It was when the non-believers would harrass the believers the night before the biggest holyday of the year: All Hallows. Or in modern English All Saints.

In Celtic tradition, it was the day when the veil between our world and the next was at its thinnest; the day when the spirits of the dead of the past year or so could roam the world one more time. Carving pumpkins into faces was a way to welcome and calm spirits that might otherwise be distraught; they could make themselves at home in them.
