In my bedroom I have two of the walls painted white, and the other two painted candy apple red. But I hate the red now, and I want to paint all four walls a very pale, light pistachio color. I bought double strength primer to paint over the red, but I know I'm bound to make some mistakes because I have no idea what I'm doing.

Can anybody offer any tips?

paint it with stain killz first. u can find it in the paint aisle. We had a bedroom fire before and the only! thing that totally covered the smoke stains after cleaning, etc. completely was that.

Primer is always a good base to any paint... typically, the primer should be a lighter color than the final paint. This also helps you detect thin areas and are able to go back and touch up. Just take your time and don't rush... watch the drips and runs so you have a smooth, final color.

I was going to suggest using some primer but, you already bought some. Try the primer out and see how it works out I would put a couple of coats on. You might get more help from some one who works in the hardware store that you bought the paint in.

Walmart! carries "Kilz Casual Colors -Our very best one coat paint" works wonderfully! try it, you will love it!~$20~ it is quite possible that it will take more than 1 coat _considering your deep red base as well as if you have textured walls (texture always takes more paint). i have only seen this paint in 1 gallon containers so then if you have a huge room, it could take Many Gallons but the colors are guaranteed unlike lowes_after they mix it, it's yours. did i mention the colors? you bring the swatch in and they mix the color_it is in the primer! they've come a long way nowadays! ie: several years ago, my mother repainted the entire interior of their home. she used Many Gallons of primer so that she could paint the dark wood paneling in their den, Then she used several More gallons of paint for her color. I avoided painting because i thought it had to be that way. it may take a couple of coats of this kilz casual colors paint but i promise, nothing like the mess you will go through breaking it down in several stages. note: the little splatters that i got on my new carpet while painting came right up (spot cleaned it the same day as i painted- unlike old carpet, it is harder to get spills out of old/delicate fibers)

Just did this. I used Kilz primer. Ask for it at your hardware store or a Lowe's or Home Depot. They will sell you what you need. Then used regular primer over that. Then painted the wall beige. Worked great. Thanks.

Good for you, you bought primer. Get all the furniture out of the room, spread tarp over the floor, put tape over the outlets, crown molding if you have it, and where the wall meets the celing and floor. Have fun!

3 good solid coats of primer should do ya. plus, if your ceiling is white, there really is no room for messing up, but do use tape!! don't start painting without the prep. i would go to www.hgtv.com to learn more on safety and all that!

1st paint the red walls with Kilz stain...the red will bleed thru if you just use just regular primer.
After you use the Kilz stain (which is a special primer) then you can paint...it should work with one coat....try it on a smaller area on the red wall 1st,then take on the rest...good luck!!

Put a layer of Kilz on it first. That'll cover it and make a good base for the color you want.
