Being a Shaman or Medicine Man takes training and spiritual development from many sources, books, teachers and inner growth and wisdom. Those who are drawn to be shamans usually have had a life altering experience that has lead them to know and understand that there is more to life than just what meets the eye.

A good book that has helped me on my path is The Way of the Shaman by Michael Harner. He is one of the most prominent authors on shamanism and has studied the topic for years.

Shamanism is not a system of belief or faith; it is a system of
experiential knowledge. The use of shamanic journeying is one of the
paths to gain direct experiential knowledge. Experiential knowledge
can be defined as that which is experienced first hand by the senses. It
is a way to a deeper understanding of events and influences
surrounding a situation or person. One of the most important roles of
the shaman has been to seek revelatory knowledge from visionary
sources, which may be for healing purposes, “why has this person
become ill?”, “what medicine does this person need?
