The diagnostics are pretty simple, though the repair may be a pain in the hiney. Depends on the cause.
Go here------>

http://autorepair.about.com/library/ts/obd-i/bl-dtcs-54.htm

...and scroll down below the description charts. Identify the shape of the connector, and with a paperclip, jump terminals "A" & "B". Then turn the key on but do not start.
Read the procedure for retrieving the codes. When you get the second "12", all of the codes have been displayed.
Using the description chart, you now know what circuit or system has failed.

REMEMBER---->The code(s) indicate a failure in a system or circuit, and NOT NECESSARILY a specific component. Diagnose the system, BEFORE throwing parts at the car.
If the diagnostic and repair routines are not familiar to you, then go to the library and obtain the information from the repair manual found in the REFERENCE section.
Or you can purchase one from the local parts house, or Barnes and Noble, or Borders Books, or (?)
Also available at Amazon.com or BN.com or(?)
You can also go here------->

...and get all the information for your car, not just the diagnostics, but all the published professional level data for an annual subscription fee. Very good stuff, and it is right at your computer.

Good Luck

If the check engine light work look under your dash for the 12 pin aldl link bolted to the bottom of the dash. Use a paper clip to jump pins one and two with the car off but key on. The check engine light or mil will the blink 1 time with a space and then 2 times. This is a code 12 and tells you the check system is functioning ok. It will show code 12 for 3 times and will then display other codes for 3 times each. a repair manual such as chiltons or haynes will be a big help and will tell you what each codes means.

The problem may be beyond your reach, or normal visual inspection. It could be the Crank Angle Sensor or the Ignition
Control Module in the Distributor. (Most Common ol Gm Probs)
