First -- Kal-EL doesn't have the same need for costume functionality that you might find in other heroes (such as Batman, Iron-Man ... who tend to have a whole wardrobe closet thing going). Kal's power is within. It is not necessary for him to vary his costume to achieve super abilities.

Secondly -- made from the blankets in the rocket ship he arrived in -- it is the only fabric on the planet that can withstand the powers and abilities of Superman. What else is he going to wear? What's the point in constantly changing it? He does get a little busy, you know. He has to unravel that thing and then weave it back together. What a pain.

Then consider this -- you are asking this question about the man ... who all he could come up with for a disguise of his alter ego was a pair of glasses and combing his S-curl off of his forehead. Hmmm.

If you want fashion consciousness from the house of EL ... Earth's favorite immigrants from Krypton -- you need to follow his cousin, Kara Zor-EL (AKA Supergirl).

I think you will find what your are looking for in fashion imagery complete with the well placed crimson and gold "S".

One of my favorite old reprint stories from the fifties or sixties was where Luthor disguised himself as another scientist and got Superman to loan him his super suit for a while.

(He said he had an atomic powered robot he wanted to test, but was afraid the atomic motor would blow up. Wearing the Superman costume, the robot exploded, but Metropolis was not destroyed. Then, under cover of the smoke from the explosion, Luthor switched the super suit for one that was not indestructible, but was made of ordinary fabric.)

Next time Superman wore the suit, it kept getting shot full of bullet holes, scorched by fires-- the colors even ran in the rain! So he went back to the scientist (Luthor in disguise) who had a glib explanation ready. He said that the atomic radiations had made the suit no longer indestructible. He offered to make Superman a new suit.

The new suit was flourescent green and yellow, for good visibility, had a bubble helmet, which contained radio receivers so Superman could get distress calls frokm the Coast Guard, etc., and gloves so he wouldn't leave fingerprints. Most important, there was an anti-Kryptonite device in the belt buckle. (Luthor used fake Kryptonite to make Superman think he was protected.)

Later, a timer inside the belt released some actual Kryptonite and Superman got weak and helpeless, while Luthor disguised himself as Superman using the original super suit (which was actually still indestructible.) Jimmy Olsen rescued Superman who then stopped Luthor from being able to rob the donations for a new Superman museum by posing as Superman himself.

In the end, Superman kept the new suit for emergencies, but felt relieved to have his old clothes back.

Superman is probably one of the best untainted American icons since baseball was scorched by the steroids controversy (not to mention a team throwing the World Series a while back). I'm guessing people just want to preserve and protect his image for as long as possible because they feel a familiar bond that they can relate to.

He's the symbol for truth, justice and the American Way (hence the colors)... secondly the sign is his birthright, being a Kryptonian.
But Superman has made costume changes, like once he changed to black.

2 Reasons...

1. The "S" image superman wears is his family symbol. Unless he plans on changing families, he'll keep on wearing the "S".

2. D.C. Comics owns one of the biggests and most recognizable brands in all of entertainment and pop culture. They wouldn't dare remove the "S".
