so i want to hand out something to the audence that RESEMBLES rotten tomatoes....but i don't want it to smell or make a mess
what do i use?

Get some of those cheap squeezable "stress" balls. Some even come in the shape of red apples. I use them in the classroom by letting students throw them to each other to hold the floor, similarly to the conch shell in Lord of the Flies. That might work. If that's too expensive, you could buy large red or brown fluffy pompons. Maybe even balls of yarn.
