Memento is a good movie that discusses this. So does Manchurian Candidate, Clockwork Orange, and Mulhulland Drive.

It's a Wonderful Life...noting all the things George Bailey did to make a difference but in a "what if" mode. What if he had never lived and what consequences would arise from that. Also A Christmas Carol by Dickens. You are given so many what ifs and from his past to the what became his present self to what would happen if he changed his attitudes and mores for the better of his fellow man plus you gotta admit there was one major guilt trip going on with Scrooge..LOL
It's like dominos...what we do not matter how small may impact others in ways we never imagined. When Nestles baby formula was introduced to African mothers those who gave it to them thought they were doing a good thing. They encouraged the mothers to give it to the babies to ensure they would become healthy and strong. What they did not take into consideration is the babies were largely lactose intolerant and grew sick and weak...some dying because the mothers became convinced that the formula would work eventually. That came from my anthropological studies...or rather my memory...LOL
