it was brewing from day one. the industrial north, where agriculture was limited and slavery not condusive, found slavery repugnant (although at the same time it fully embraced sweatshop manufacturing and child labor), while south prospered by it and rationalized it.

As America grew, north and south jockeyed for dominance over the nation and the new frontier; conflict was inevitable. The only alternative to civil war would have been a negotiated separation; something the Manifest Destiny crowd would never have accepted.
