"keep your nose clean" is an old fashioned saying. It just means do a good job, have a good attitude, don't get into the gossipy circles, show up on time, etc. It sounds like he sees a future for you, don't prove him wrong!

Trying to decipher the business code is difficult at times. A lot will depend on the culture of the company you are working for.

In many cases, the boss is telling you to keep working hard and do not ask a lot of questions. Just do what he/she tells you and get the work done as quickly and accurately as you can. Then let them know that you are done, and go on to the next assignment.

If you think that you can talk with your boss, you might also consider asking them directly what they mean. But only do this if you think that they are willing to help train you in the business.

If you really want to succeed in an organization, try to learn as much as you can about the business that your company is in and who the competitors are. What can you suggest to help your organization do things faster, better and/or cheaper than the competition and yes, you should go far in that company.

Good Luck.

I've been on Wall Street for over 22 years. I'm 45 years old I've had my ups and downs. I was laid off for over a year in 2003/ 04 I got a consultanting job with no benefits for me and my family. I worked my butt off at this bank and they kept me on. They let all the other consultants go and they liked what I was doing. keeping my nose clean. I also kept looking around and just this past month I finally got what I waited for. A chance to be a boss. I found another bank that needed someone with my experience and they found me. My boss is going to retire in 3 years and they want me to lead the group. Things do come to you with Patience.

In common use it means if you don't cause trouble and more importantly, don't do anything to make your superior look bad, he/she will take care of you and send business/deals/work your way.
