because the vowel makes the same sound in both words. People forget that the doubled vowel modifies the sound of the s that follows it, but the vowel itself is pronounced the same. It's unlike the other pair of words that people make the same mistake with- choose and chose- where the double vowel is pronounced differently from the single vowel.

At first I thought it's probably a typo. It happens. But I see that same mistake, as well as others, too frequently to just pass it off as a mistyped word. Others I've noticed are 'to' and 'too', as well as 'your' and 'you're'.
I don't know why some misspellings are more common than others. Perhaps it's a visual thing.

I honestly have no idea.
I, however, have never had that problem.
But my boyfriend does.
He can't really spell all that well.
So I constantly have to go over his stuff and fix it for him. O_o
My guess is because the words are spelled exactly the same, with only one extra "O" to make them different.

The vowel's sound seems to be so similar that most people get confused with these words.
But it does'nt make much of a difference to me.
