The copper reacted with the oxygen in the air to turn from copper metal, to a copper +2 ion, it is an oxidation reaction.

When metals break down in air, its called oxydization. When iron oxydizes, its called 'rust' and its red. Aluminum rust is off-white and copper (which the Statue of Liberty is made from) turns greeen.

the same reason a penny turns that green color. Its calcium build up.
They should wash it in CLR. lol

i am pretty sure that it is mold that has grown on it and the atmosphere(the oxygen), or when it rains. just like when you get a really old penny it is green and you can hardly tell what it is!
