Are there any beaches and/or ocean coastlines around San Francisco or Marin County that are somewhat solitary? I'm looking for an "every weekend" escape, and it would be nice to find a solitary beach where I can just relax. It doesn't necessarily have to be completely solitary, because that's probably given to private owners, but somewhere where there's barely any people.

I don't mind whatever the weather's temperament is, just as long as there's barely any people and the place isn't hostile. A beach, an island off the coast, anything, I'm all ears.

Head past Marin to the Sonoma State beaches, between Bodega Bay and the Russian River. There are a number of small beaches with far fewer people than in Stinson Beach in Marin.

By the way if you are expecting to see some scenes from Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds at Bodega Bay, the town has changed, but the old school house from the movie is in the quaint small inland town of Bodega, a short ways away.

The Pacific Grove, about a stone's throw from Monterey is a good choice. It's not that solitary but compared to the touristy areas in Monterey, the level of quietness is like the difference between heaven and purgatory. You should see the clean beaches (a state protected marine sanctuary for miles and miles out to sea) and the variety of wildlife lounging there in early foggy mornings. In order to get to Pacific Grove, you have to drive through this forest hill full of majestic and tall trees. It gives you a little bit of a scare at night because it's so dark and quiet.

Besides, for some reason, the people are extra friendly for no good reason. Things are definitely slow paced. If you need some company, you can always jog down to the cannery row and watch tourists gobble down gourmet meals or go to the local theater, where the ticket seller at the box office sells you a ticket and then has to hop to the concession stand to hand you the popcorn. Also, every Saturday night, the town hall becomes a dance social where everyone is invited, hosted by some community dance club. It's kinda funny and nostalgic to watch old and young people do their thing together.

At any rate, I hope you find what you're looking for.

Check out the beaches in Point Reyes National Seashore. The beaches in this area are rough water and pretty cold all year round and tend to attract sharks, and the sand tends to disappear when the currents shift in the winter, but that is pretty typical of Nor Cal beaches. If you don't mind that, this area has some beautiful, quiet, relatively off-the-beaten-track beaches that you can walk on for hours and hours. Pt. Reyes also has great coastal hiking trails and lots of natural vegetation and wildlife. You might see whales, elephant seals, sea lions, elk, and lots of other critters.

You could easily spend 3-4 days just exploring to find the perfect beach spot for yourself. My favorite walking beach is Limantour, and I have gone as long as half an hour without running into another person at its far end. For a long sit in the sun with a good book, try Shell Beach on the sheltered Tomales Bay side. The whole peninsula is a peaceful place, good energy. It will clear your head.

Nearly any of the beaches North and South of SanFrancisco meets those requirements. You can get down to the beach from a number of places just South of the Golden Gate Bridge. The beachfront there is so vast, you can't help put find a piece to have all to yourself.

Santa Cruz is a cool little beach town, but it's not the type of beach that you are looking for. There are a lot of state park beaches north of there that you might give a try.

Ocean Beach, is pretty private because of the rip tide and the shark attacks and jelly fish. But if you stay away from the water it's a great beach... haha

3 of my favorite low-key secret spot beaches right outside of San Francisco are Muir Beach, Rodeo Beach and Bolinas (a treasure). Have fun!
