It depends. If it is an utmost emergency, then you might have general anesthesia--its the quickest way to put you out. Other wise you would need an epidural. I'm sure everything will be fine and you won't need anything. Good Luck.

Most hospitals now have "birthing rooms" where you can be as natural as if you delivered at home but doctors are available within seconds if something goes wrong. I've had 2 c-sections. For both I was given general anesthetic. With a general anesthetic the only needle is an IV in case something goes wrong while you are under and they have to have an open vein to administer medication (when you go into shock your veins collapse). Talk to your doctor about it. He may be willing to go that route but the anesthetic does affect the baby and is usually discouraged these days. An epidural only affects you, not the baby. If your family has a history of easy, head-first deliveries and you don't have seriously narrow hips or anything like that you'll probably be fine having a natural birth.

I understand you 100% Try your best to go into this with a positive attitude. If you do have to get a c-section you will have to get an epidural unless you have a severe emergency then they will put you under with anesthesia which is extremely dangerous for your baby.I am so scared of needles butonce you are in the hospital your nerves will calm because all of these woories won't matter to you because you will realize you are going to have your baby.I faced similar situations i had twins my last pregnancy and day after day i thought about how i would be able to get a c-section if i had complications , i actually was in so much pain i begged for an epidural but it was too late to get one. They gave me an interthecal which is given through your spine but truthfully sweetie it was not painful at all.I didn't have to keep anything in my back they just gave me a shot and that was that. You will be fine, try not to worry to much keep happy thoughts about your baby, soon all this will be a memory.

You really cant plan a birth but I too hate needles and I hate epidurals but I have had 2..Ive had 5 baby's .the first epidural was because I had been induced and baby wouldn't come out.second was emergency C section .If you can avoid being induced you have a better chance of a natural birth but ,hey if things don't go to plan then you will cope because having that baby come out safe is the most important thing .I much prefer natural birth and I aimed for that and got it 3 out of 5 times. The thing with a C section with epidural is that you see the baby straight away ,you are there so that helps you bond with the baby too ,it is scary but you don't feel anything.and its safer for you and baby than full anaesthetic

Get a doula or at least talk to one. They are fantastic for giving you so much support and advice.
This is such a common fear and I know that fear. First, do everything you can to prevent the c-section. Look up optimal fetal positioning on the net and help baby be in the best position possible.. Drink tons of water, walk daily, stay healthy. In labour, STAY HOME as long as possible. Take advantage of your bathtub, changing positions frequently and keeping relaxed. If you need a c-section then you know it is for the right reasons. You do either have to have an epidural or general anesthetic (sleep). Epidurals are considered safer for you and baby plus you are awake to see your baby right after birth. Truthfully though, keep your mind focused on having your baby as intended. Good for you though that you are getting all scopes of information. Just don't let the c-section thoughts consume you.

This just happened to me with my son. I had had an epidural with my first and hated it so my second was natural and my son was supossed to be. He had his cord wrapped around his neck twice and his respirations were going down. I had to get an epi. It is really uncomfortable but it's something you can get through. It's actually a tube that gets threaded into your back. They will numb all up and down and you won't feel a thing. It sucks, but it's over quickly. I ended up not having a c section. I was only dialated to 8 but they gave me the option to try to push through that or have a c section. I pushed like hell and then I was happy to have that epidural. Good luck with the new baby!

You will get an epidural if you need a C-Section... I dont know if its a spinal epidural or an IV... but you will need one, otherwise you will feel them cutting into you... and you wouldn't want that would you?
I am due in 7 weeks and plan on delivering natural too. Good luck!!!!

I believe it's an epidural because any IV meds would also transfer to the baby. Also, you will want to be as alert as possible to see you newborn! Needles can be scary but you'll be so focused on having your baby that it won't be an issue.
