I agree with dodge man but the switch may be able to just be unplugged and see if that stops the problem. If so have the switch replaced or live without the lockup which will decrease your fuel economy.

You Idle air control motor is going bad. or IAC motor in Mechanics terms. It's not that expensive to have replaced and can be done by you with a few basic tool.Have someone show you where it is.it can be tested also by a mechanic to make sure that is the problem. Fords,and Lincolns are notorious for this part to cause the problem you are describing.

i own a repair shop,,and it sounds like the transmission torque convert lock up switch is stuck on it,,and it don't want to let it down shift right,,i had this happen to me once in a mercury grand marquis,,almost the same car that you have ,, and it almost got me in a accident,,you have to have the pan dropped in it,and a new switch put in it,,it doesn't cost that much to do really though,,and it will cure what its doing,good luck with it,i hope this help,s.
