30 cm/s X 60 (sec) = 1,800 cm/m
1,800 cm/m X 60 (min) = 108,000 cm/hr
108,000 cm = 1080 meters per hour

The safest way to do any unit conversion is to just multiply your initial value by 1 unil the units are what you want. I know this sounds strange. I will explain.

I don't know the direct conversion, but I do know this:

1 inch = 2.54 cm
100 cm = 1 m
1000 m = 1 km
12 inch = 1 foot
5280 foot = 1 mile
60 sec = 1 minute
60 minute = 1 hour

I can take any of the above equations and make the number one by dividing one side by the other ( 1 = (2.54 cm)/(1 inch)).

I will convert 1 mile to km by taking 1 mile and multiplying it by 1 until all the units but km cancel:

1 mile = 1 mile x (5280 ft/1 mile) x (12 inch/1 foot) x (2.54 cm/1 inch) x (1 m/100 cm) x (1 km/1000 m) = 1.609344 km

Go through the above carefully to make sure its clear. Once you get comfortable with the concept of mulitplying by 1 and cancelling out the units properly, you can do any unit conversion.

In your case, 30 cm/sec to mi/hr, I'll get you started:

(30 cm/sec) * (1 in/2.54 cm) * (1 foot/ 12 inch) * (60 sec/min) = 59.055 ft/min

Take it from there.

Think of 30 cm/s as a fraction of 30 cm over 1 second. You want the "seconds" to cancel, which means you need to multiply by an equivalent fraction containing seconds in the numerator and hours in the denominator. Now we have 30 cm/s times 3600 seconds/1 hour (that's essentially the same thing as one since 3600 seconds equals one hour). When you multiply across, you get 108,000 cm per hour. Now we have to do the same thing to convert cm to miles. The conversion has to have cm in the denominator with an equivalency to one mile in the numerator. Looking at Google, there are 160,934.4 cm in one mile so we multiply by 1 mile/160,934.4 cm. This ends up being 108,000 miles/160934.4 hours. Do the actual division to reduce it to miles per one hour -- roughly 0.67 miles per hour or two miles per 3 hours.
