Back in the fifties and sixties there was such a craze for naughahyde couches and recliners that the poor beasts nearly did go extinct. They were put on the endangered list, and although a bit of poaching continued, by and large the pressure was off the naughas. However, given the long adolescent period before they reach sexual maturity, and the tendency to small litters - not to mention the number of natural predators - their recovery has been slow. Small populations are gradually making a comeback in northern Maine and Michigan's Upper Peninsula, but wolf predation in MI and coyote predation in ME continue to keep their numbers small. Fortunately, the demand for buttery soft Italian leather couches may finally give the beknighted naughas a chance at survival.

Sadly the Naughas are no more, they is extinct The last one was reported shot by an enraged husband who caught the male lethario Naugha in fragrante delicto with his female passenger pigeon spouse, in mid-air, no less. But the joke was on the husband passenger pigeon. For he was the last of his species and cannot find a female Naugha to breed with.

Not quite yet, but Naugs are in a very endangered state! I mean when's the last time you saw really *good* Naughahyde? Decades! It used to be everywhere! I thought I saw a clutch of Naug eggs close to Lake Michigan and I made certain to leave them alone...you don't want the Naugha leaving those eggs unprotected!!! Will that struggling breed every come back to it's once bright spot of glory? I think it's time to call in the Naug Hunter!!!

How bizarre! You actually answered a question that I forgot I even had. I always wondered how to spell the word naughehyde and I always wondered where that fabric came from.

I now see that the naugha must have existed at one time, but unfortunately we no longer have a use for it. It's possible that they have simply gone back to the planet that they came from, for they have served their purpose here on earth. May the naughas prosper and supply other planets with confusing fabric.

No. They live in the Nation Reservation for the protection and eventual rehabilitation of Naughas, in Westville Louisianna. Donations can be made at their Web site, www.savethenaughas.com.

Naugha farming has become popular in the South in recent years. They are getting close to being removed from the endangered species list.
