Green River

Pearl Jam's history starts with the seminal grunge band Green River, which formed in 1983 out of a number of earlier Seattle bands.

I didn't know there was one. So I went to Wikipedia and it said: Vedder had been the lead vocalist for Bad Radio, a local rock group. The group was known (and actually toured) for a time as Mookie Blaylock
Temple of the Dog was started by Chris Cornell. After the death of his former roommate, Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood, Cornell wrote two songs in tribute: "Say Hello 2 Heaven" and "Reach Down". Cornell approached Wood's former bandmates, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament, with the intention of releasing the songs as a single.

With the band completed following the addition of Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron (who would later join Pearl Jam after the breakup of Soundgarden in April 1997) and future Pearl Jam lead guitarist Mike McCready,
Mother Love Bone was a band established in 1989 in the Seattle area by ex-Green River members Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament and Bruce Fairweather. Their unique fusion of glam and punk rock music became the prototype for what is now known as grunge, which enjoyed enormous success during the early 1990s.

Along with such prominent bands as Soundgarden, The Melvins, Alice In Chains and Nirvana, Mother Love Bone became part of what came to be known as the "Seattle Sound" in the late '80s.

Unfortunately, lead singer Andrew Wood (from the band Malfunkshun) died of a heroin overdose in 1990, a day before the release of their full length debut album, Apple. Previously they had released an acclaimed EP, Shine, and toured the U.S. with the Dogs D'Amour. Soon after Wood's death, Gossard and Ament joined singer Chris Cornell and drummer Matt Cameron to form Temple of the Dog. The group released their self titled album on April 16, 1991 as a tribute to Andrew Wood. Singer Eddie Vedder also contributed vocals on two songs for the album, including the hit single "Hunger Strike". Vedder, Gossard and Ament would go on to form Pearl Jam.
