By all means . If you do not you just have painted rotted wood. You'll only have to replace it sooner rather than later

If you are talking 6" in 20', you could cut the rotted wood back to good, then fill the hole with Bondo with fiber. Yep I am talking car body repair Bondo. I have used it for years. you can sand it drill it paint it. It is a quick and permanent fix. If you are talking 12" in 20', you could cut the rotted out and splice it.

No you have to replace it or else it is going to look terrible and it is bad anyway to have rotted wood.

it will be cheaper in the long run to replace it. when i had work on my house there was some textured panel board that my carpenter used. i'm not sure if that 's the name of it. pay a couple hundred bucks now, and avoid disaster and more money in the future. water damage is EXPENSIVE!

u could paint over it and that would help dress it up a lil bit, but it would look bad again b4 long. it really should be replaced

dryrot spreads also and if you do not replace it, it will just get worse, you should also find out why it is rotten. As to fix the cause also.
