fear of rejection

We have more to lose, and we take rejection home like a bad report card. Besides a battle of pure ego, perhaps we value the compliment of being asked out far more highly than girls. I liked an American Pie 2 quote (about the movie, not in it) that "men keep score, but women make the rules". Since you've achieved your glorious independence and created a fault line in society and gender roles, it feels like now men need women more than times past when women needed men. There's an objection and exception for every general statement (which bloggers have a hard time reconciling), but as a whole, the tables have turned, women are getting the jobs and respect they want, and the males don't know how they can fit in to a new power structure when the old one worked so well for them. Freedom and equality bring their own new costs and inconveniences. Sorry, I went off on a tangent, but if a guy is turned down by one, he has reason to assume he's not up to par with the girls as a whole

It depends on what age range you are talking about. Young guys have no experience and are unsure of themselves. Older guys have to learn from their past few triumphs or failures. Mature guys wonder if they are still viable. Also, some underlying themes are: 1. Fear of rejection 2. self doubts about looks or mannerisms 3. difficulty in communicating their feelings. Often times, a man wants to ask out what he considers a really "good catch", but he may think that he's out of his element, i.e. the woman might be too good for him. He might think that he can't compete with other men. The way boys are raised you often get one of 2 extremes: super confident and somewhat over boisterous men, and wishy-washy shy self doubting men. Both can have their merits. I recall that women often seemed like they were always looking for the "bigger better deal". Maybe if men are shy around you it might be the way you present yourself. I'm not trying to bust you down here, and I know that women have to be careful and somewhat defensive, but try to reflect on yourself and see yourself the way that a prospective date might see you.

because talking to a girl you like well enough to ask out is very difficult. First, how do you approach the girl? What do you say to her, that is a come on line, but not sound like a come on line?

Women, especially young women, can be very fickle and hard to approach. I never could figure out how to ask a girl out. I just got lucky when I met my wife. She was willing to over look all of the stupid things I said and did, because she knew I really wanted to be with her, I just didn't know how to say it.

I don't think it has anything to do with age, or maturity. It's personality.

I dunno if this is anyone else's expirience, but I remember in elementary school boy/girl, boy/girl being used as punishment to break up groups of boys and groups of girls being unruly and chatty.

Maybe this has something to do with it.

If not for messenger, my fiancee and I wouldn't have met as we confessed to each other, with both being shy.
