The last time I checked, most states do not use anywhere near a life sentence for people who commit such an atrocious crime. Just wondering if anyone felt the same way that I do.

I think that these people who are ruining others lives to satify themself for a short period should defiently pay more than they do. I do not understand why it is just a smack on the hand for rapists or child molesters. How many people do you know that was molested as a child? Every girl I grew up with that was, has paid for it in some way or another in their life. We need to take from them what they have ruined in so many people we come across everyday. Make the bastards pay! Thats what I think!

No.

Perhaps a different approach to punishments, but not harsher punishments. Regardless of how you feel, the punishment should fit the crime. Too many people are sent to jail and come out worse than when they went in: I dont see any punishment in sending a person convicted of a crime to a prison where they have access to more than they did before- like access to colleges, college degrees, cable TV, etc. so that prison is really a punishment instead of a collection of convicted people spending a little bit of away time.

Prison may not be easy, but it is a punishment- not a club center.

They should have life sentences for all violent crimes. Most of my liberal friends will say, then were will you put them. Decriminalize marijuana and take all those out of prison that were only caught with personal use amounts, as long as they weren't involved in a violent crime.

Suzymn3...I think you chose some really bad examples, drunk drivers should also go to prison for life. There is no such thing as a mutual fist fight, if you are defending yourself that's another story, but if it's mutual that implies offense intended by both parties. Both of those things can physically ruin peoples lives for years.

Yes totally agree, although i don't live in US, all rapists should be lined up and shot so they never impose danger to another person. Also would like to say something else,i have read all the answers you got so far WHY do yous always presume a rapist is always male you ALSO get female rapists, alot of children are abused by their mother/female member of family.Rape is rape regardless of gender.....

i agree that rapists should be punished SEVERELY...damn if someone can get YEARS in prison for talking **** about the president, or driving drunk and accientally hitting someone, or getting into a MUTUAL fistfight and accidentally paralyzing someone, then a SCUMBAG who cant get a girl on his own, or a creep that has some infatuation with little kids....should be locked up for a very long time..to me they are monsters that commit more than a crime...they damage people permanantly and can ruin someones life...i also think that mothers and fathers who allow this or look the other way should be shot....they are supposed to be the ultimate protector...innocent kids ...damn im getting mad..but yes i agree with you 100%

Yes. . . . harsher punishment for ALL criminals. . . . put the rapists in a cell with 400 lbs guys named Bubba. Give Bubba tons of testosterone. . . . and a thick pair of beer goggles. . . .but no vaseline. . . . I think that is fair punishment! Let them take that for a few months and then execute them! Also make them screw Paris Hilton. . . . . you'd hear them screaming Help me Help me Help me Help me (they only said it once. . . there was an echo down there)

I think the U.S. needs harsher punishment for more crimes than rape. I think there should be a death sentence for repeat offenders and those who rape and hurt children. Would it surprise you to know that I'm a liberal democrat and saying this?

Hi I guess Im too young to have any life experience in this area but Im going to tell you a few things that my dad thinks. He's a police detective though he doesnt investigate that type of crime. He tells me about his frustrations of others including victims who easily falsify evidence on the witness stand. My dad is very ethical which makes him very good at his job because he never wants to see an innocent person convicted on false testimony. What if the person who says she was raped lies because she doesnt like the guy or picks out someones picture and says it him when she really doesnt know for sure. Being ethical is not easy when you work for the police because they just want to clear cases and they dont care who the person is. My dad is always in trouble because no one wants to work with him because they dont trust him. But my dad will never send an innocent man to jail and thats why I love him.

Before you want to send someone away think that its often just one person saying he did it. Its like those guys on that college sports team who are in big trouble because some woman said they raped her.

Yes. We need to send a signal to rapists and potential rapists and other criminals that we as a society will not tolerate or simply "wrist smack" those who have negatively altered someone's life.

No. Most rape accusations are false. Many people are convicted of rape because of a disgruntled ex-lover. Only 5 out of 100 accusations of rapes are true.
