not sure but i was using them in the mid seventy's

For example, the legendary 426 Hemi of the muscle car era, while absent in stock vehicles for almost 40 years, has been available from Mopar as a crate engine since 1992.

All of the American "Big Three" - Chrysler, GM and Ford - sell crate engines of various specifications. A number of independent engine builders sell such prebuilt units also.

actually they were introduced in the late 60,s and early 70,s,but people didn't really notice them or really start dealing with them till the early 80,s,,even then people were doubt full of them,,i know because i bought a new crate engine in 1971 it was a new 396 for a 67 chevelle,and it was a good one,,good luck i hope this help,s
