Wow a lot of crappy answers so far, let me see if I can help. First of all you are right to be looking at Intel because they have the better CPU out right now, unfortunately some die-hard AMD fans (Death Cab) are having trouble dealing with that fact. Now honestly, the X6800 (Core 2 Duo Extreme) is only slightly faster than it slower sibling the E6600, but the E6600 is a third of the price, so I would go for the E6600.

My friend got a dual core AMD XP-4800 with an ASUS MB and tells me it smokes..

i recomend against getting a core duo. dont buy intel products. however fi you do core duo or core duo extreme are pretty good as far as mobile processors go..if your getting it for a desktop just get a p4 its cheaper and better
