Yes, it is normal practice to wait right before the end of the day to terminate so that the individual can have time/privacy to gather their personal items and leave without making too much of a "scene."

Unfortunately it is legal. Happened to me a few years ago. Worked a full days work. Walked home in the snow. Got home, got a phone call that I was terminated. That sucked so bad. If the employer is an at will company, they can boot you out any time, any day, any way.

Yes. If you ever had anyone working for you, you know that's always best.
Payroll probably already had their check made out to pay for that day, so they wanted a full day's work.
If you tell someone at the beginning of the day, you get no work, lots of trouble and things turn up missing.

yes it is leagel for the employer to do this . the employee would have to file for unlawful or unfare termination.
a lot of companies have started terminating employees just short of haveing to pay them insurance and higher wages.

Yes that is legal. Most companies in act an "At will" policy which basically states that they may fire you at will.

Yup. Doesn't have to wait, can do it whenever, and at least the employee has a full day's pay.
