Tinker vs. Des Moines Ind School System
This supreme court ruling states that a persons 1st amendment rights (freedom of expression) do not stop at the schoolhouse gate. There have been later rulings that say a school can ban vulgar dress, but if the school wants to ban something besides vulgarity, they have to be able to demonstrate in a court of law that it will endanger the students in some way.
Oh yeah, a uniform solves absolutely nothing except making it harder on parents when school shopping, and taking teachers time away from class to enforce uniform codes. Gangs will always find a way to inform students of their affiliation, whether it be a certain type of watch worn on the right arm, to tattos on the neck. And you can be extremely flexible when in a gang and change the code weekly, but it's harder to adjust the uniform policy. What you end up with is a ridiculously strict uniform policy that takes 20 minutes of each class period to enforce, without even making a dent in the gang activity and violence in the school. As far as poor kids and rich kids go, have you ever been struggling for cash and tried to buy school uniforms for children? I have. And I can tell you by experience it sucks when you can't buy the plain $5 tees for your kids, so instead you have to go to the goodwill and get somebody elses hand-me-downs because instead of being able to buy the cheap new clothes, you have to buy used polo-style shirts. Everybody at school knows who the poor kids are, whether it be that they get free lunches or the house that the bus drops them off in front of. All you're promoting with school uniforms is fascism and the loss of individualism.

Offer a compromise. Ask if you can have a 'Johnny Reb' day when you can be as confederate as possible. Is there any reason why confederate flags will disrupt classes and cause school riots? Where is your school located? If it's in the South, it certainly shouldn't have that effect. If it's elsewhere, it shouldn't either, as the war ended a long, long time ago.
I agree with your stand against the bloods and crips colors and clothing. Have your school authorities been approached about banning them as well? Or your parent-teacher group? Wearing gang colors seems far more dangerous

Dang...I'm torn on this one
On the 1 hand, clothing can be offensive to others and a distraction to the teaching process.
On the other hand, a bit of free expression in how you dress make you the person that you are.... not just a robot
As with most things moderation is the key.... a tasteful confederate flag should be ok.. A conferated flag with a lynching underneath is too far.
I hate this PC when it goes too far

What do you believe in about the Civil war South? The Confederated State system? Or Slavery? Do you know ANYTHING about either??
Besides, you know you would be wearing the flag to stir up sh**!
Don't try to hike your leg over us and tell us it's raining now!
Your other point might have merit. And should be addressed by the school district

If your told you can't wear one thing because of possible disptruption, then everything else should be banned as well. If not it's hypocracy.
By the way, the confederate flag promotes an illogical life style, it should be banned as well as the Bloods and Crips clothing.

I agree the confederate flag is a symbol of American Rebelism. even though Rebelism isn't a word. School admin is blind they turn a blind eye to gangs and thugs but they enforce the most trivial rules.

that is so stupid... did they take it to the parents... at my old school they would take the dress code situation to the parents... so yea... but that is stupid. they should let u have the confederate flag clothing and they should take away the bloods and the crips shirts. i mean the bloods and crips starts fights and that can go to killing... so they need to change it.

I'm surprised you didn't get beat up by those thugs that you're saying get to wear their gang colors if you wore a confederacy shirt to school.
I think that NONE of you should be allowed to wear any of that.

The school can pretty much set their own dress code. Displaying yourself as a rebel is distracting to others. You can wear that on your own time.

This is one of the reasons I think kids should have to wear uniforms: No distractions. Also would eliminate "rich" kids making fun of "poor" kids' clothes and guys treating girls like sluts because their parents' are too irresponsible to make them wear something respectable.
