Yes it can hurt. But for everyone it's different. When I first began labor I hardly noticed because it was just like periods cramps that came at a certain time. The IV they put in my hand sucked cause they couldn't find the vein the first time. That was sore for days. Then when they gave me the pitocen (used to make contractions get closer & faster) it started to hurt like hell. Then I got the epidural....the needle to numb it hurt. The epidural just felt like a pressure going down my back. Giving birth didn't hurt as much....really just tiring. Then when all the medicine goes away you're pretty sore. The IV can get really annoying. I got a 3rd degree tear (when your perineum (the skin between your vagina & anus) tears) going down & a second degree tear going up. Doctors & nurses say if you get a perineal massage (massaging the inside of the perineum) it can lessen or completely reduce the chance of getting a tear. Your vagina will be sore for maybe 3-4 weeks. They usually give you pain killers though. If your breastfeeding (like I did) you usually heal faster & your uterus shrinks back really fast. I was scared to give birth (she was my first too!) But it wasn't a horrible experience for me. But remember everyone is different.

Yes. Labor can be downright uncomfortable! Even painful! Be prepared! Take childbirth classes. Personally, I think that the Bradley method is the best. I gave birth to my 3 children using this method, totally natural and unmedicated. I learned the skills to work with my body so I would have the least pain possible.

As soon as you permit medical intervention(s) such as an epidural you open yourself up for a host of other interventions. For example, a common side effect of the epidural is a lowered heart rate in mother and/or baby so you are given another medication to counteract the side effect.

Think about it. We were made to give birth. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. The best gift you can give your baby is the Gift of Birth. Natural Birth. You wont regret it.

BradleyBirth.com has very good information about birth. It also has a national directory where you can locate a teaher in your area. At least call some childbirth educators and find out what its all about.

I'll be honest the part that hurts is the contractions, and I think the reason is it is such a different kind of pain. I had an epidural(at 6cm dialated) usually you get ur epidural at 3 or 4 cm.and after that I felt nothing for hours even after I delivered. But no matter how bad it hurts or how difficult the labor it is so worth it!!

it doesn't half hurt!

it starts off with something like a 'braxton hicks' contraction

when this is repeated at regular intervals then you can have a shrewd guess that labour has started

this part doesn't hurt but is the time to get whatever you have arranged for childbirth underway (IE phone the midwife/hospital/hubby etc)

then after a while it begins to become more powerful and ones pain threshold is variable but most find this pain rather like period pain (and then some) which comes in waves

i would advise pain relief asap which will make it far less traumatic for you in the long run

It doesn't have to hurt, but it can. To tell you the truth, I have had worse menstrual cramps than labor pains. Our bodies tell us we are having pain in response to pressure, heat, cold or another stimulus to our nerve endings. Pain, isn't real in the sense that it is just a message from our brains. Labor is a natural event and the body is designed and able to deal with it. The pain comes from fear, stress, and imaginary horrors like watermelons through a baseball-sized hole. The baby's head is mushy enough (thanks to a skull that collapses on itself a bit) to fit easily through a 10cm space that is also a little stretchy. Most babies are born with heads that are only a couple of centimeters larger in diameter than 10.
Most women walk (or ride) into the hospital believing that they are about to undergo the most excruciating pain in their lives, not only is that silly but it quickly becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy.
To be succinct (oops, too late) no, it doesn't hurt, at least it shouldn't.

The contractions felt like sombody took a knife and stabbed me in the stomach, and then started twisting it...that is the only way I can describe it... as for the pushing out part, I dont know I had to get an epidural after 14 hrs.....

it depends on your threshold for pain, how nervous or stressed you are and what kind of position the baby is in. with my first one it felt like rolling diarhea cramps at the worst. the second one i thought i had been ran over by a truck. the third one was a nice mix of in between. my advice, take the lamaze classes-or whatever else they offer. they really help. i took them for the first one and buy the time the 2nd one got here, it went so fast i forgot everything i'd learned with the 1st.

I'd rather have another child than pass a kidney stone! It hurts, but it goes away real quick. Then u r just sore for a few weeks, all that stretchin kinda makes things tender.

Yes, labor hurts, but once you see that small little face and know it was created by you. The pain is worth it. Just wait for the smiles and giggles.

Ok - imagine pushing a pea through a cocktail straw. What does the cocktail straw look like afterwards? Ya. That's what the vagina looks like afterwards. Do you think that would hurt?
