in those days the indian casinos only had bingo so most people had to go to bookies who would sometimes break their legs if they didn't pay up. Also when asking for credit you couldn't get as much for a log cabin as you can for one of today's modern homes. I mean the DIDN"T EVEN HAVE CABLE!!! okay truely it was harsh conditions and lack of knowledge in the area of what to grow for food etc. the indian thing got bad when the native americans realized they were the target of conquering white men who killed them and took their land, the scalping thing was a result of settlers being paid for the scalp of an indian and they copied this tactic thus the settlers learned about the meaning of "a taste of your own medicines" , the diseases of the day were bad too, small pox and pnuemonia ,scarlett fever to name a few..
