It is a certain number material in the pencil. It is not lead because they do not allow it anymore because of lead poisining. But a #1 penicl is way worse anyway!!!

rofl! #2 is just the right shade of lead, and is used for Scantrons. #'s 1 and 3 are mainly for artists.
