Well actually a number of bacteria multiply, but a single cell divides. So the exact usage is different, but your question made me stop and think for a minute. Thanks.

It means the same thing to confuse people, basically, but, if you think about it, it is just the same as any other math class. You see, anytime you divide something out, you will gain more. For Example, like if you are to use one half (1/2) to divide something, you took that single alloment and broke it apart. So now, lets say you have 38 people and you need to divide that by .5. You'll get 76. there are 76 halves in 38.
so this may have not helped you and only makes sense to myself, but I tried! Good luck in Biology!

multiplication and division are the same thing in math too
division is defined as a type of multiplication
x divided by a is the same as x times 1 over a or, the reciprical of a, or the multiplicative inverse of a

at the same time as Noah commanded each and each of the animals on the ark to flow forth and multiply, all of them did (except for 2 snakes ... they were adders). at the same time as cells divide each and each new cellular receives 0.5 of each DNA helix (cut up through each of the rungs) and each and each cellular ought to reconstruct the lacking halves. this happens again and again multiplying the type of cells (a million, 2, 4, 8, 16, and so on.) in spite of the indisputable fact that the cells ought to divide into 2 halves earlier they multiply.

A cell divide and becomes 2. That "multiplies" the number of cells

Good question.
They are both methods of reproduction.
One-celled organisms, like amoebas and paramecium divide to produce more of 'em.
Other creatures "multiply" --- sometimes producing many offspring at once.

Some forms of life (bacteria, cells, etc) multiply by dividing themselves in two parts.
Take one cell and divide it in two. You got two cells. Divide each cell in two parts again. You got four now. And so on...

multiplication essentially means reproduce. there is sexual reproduction and asexual reproduction. in sexual reproduction..well you know and a sexual reproduction is when the organism (like a cell) splits it self in two.
in reproduction, the adult gives the offspring certian traits like eye color etc. asexual reproduction non of the traits are passed off.
