Since you have y-(8-y)=32, I would first try and get rid of the parentheses.
Since there is a negative outside of the parentheses, you would just make everything inside them OPPOSITE
(having a negative outside of it is basically just timesing everything by -1, which just flips it all - makes positives negative and negatives positive)
So, if you flip the insides and get rid of the parentheses, you now have
y-8+y=32
You can combine the two ys and you have
2y-8=32
To bring the 8 to the other side, you add 8 to both sides
2y=40
now, divide everything by 2 and you get
y=20

...Hmm, well basically with all solve problems, you want to get the variable alone.
How to do that? Ok, since the variables are already on one side, you just want to but the like terms together.(the expressions and such)... So in order to put them together, you first have to take away the parenthesis. You take the parenthesis away, by multiplying with whatever # is before it...and then you should be left with
y-8+y=32
wonder why it's like that? ... So do you see the negative sign before the parenthesis in y-(8-y)=32 ....when you multiply, you multiply with the expressions inside the parenthesis. Also, since there is an invisible number with that negative sign, which is one. So you multiply the expressions inside the parenthesis by one... Which will get y-8+y=32
So now, put the y's together which will then get 2y. (Simple math- 1y plus 1y equals to 2y!^^)
So now it is 2y-8=32. From here, just do it like a regular solve problem.... To get the variable alone, add 8 to both sides...because it will then be 2y-8+8=32+8...The variable will be alone, while the other side is going to be 40...
The equation is now 2y=40. Again, keep trying to get the variable alone. Divide 2 from each side, which will then get you the answer of y=20.
Show work:
y-(8-y)=32
y-8+y=32
2y-8=32
2y-8+8=32+8
2y=40
2y/2=40/2
y=20
Check:
y-(8-y)=32
20-(8-20)=32
20-(-12)=32
20+12=32
32=32
Voila.
:] Hope you understand learned from this.

Distribute the negative: y - 8 + y = 32
Combine like terms: 2y - 8 = 32
Add 8 to both sides: 2y = 40
Divide by 2: y = 20

Distribute the negative sign
y - 8 + y = 32
Combine like terms
2y - 8 = 32
Add 8 to each side
2y = 40
Divide both sides by 2
y = 20

y - ( 8 - y ) = 32
take the term (8-y) to the right side: (minus sing changes to plus)
y = 32 + (8-y)
distribute the term:
y = 32 + 8 - y
take the right hand y to left: (the minus sign changes to plus)
y+y = 32 + 8
do the addition:
2y = 40
devide each side by 2 :
y = 40 / 2 = 20
so, y =20
