Emigrating from my native Holland to Canada and starting with nothing so being forced to take care of myself and my young bride. Did it work? Yes, I am happy to say. After years of struggling, falling and getting up, progress was made step by step until we succeeded.

When I was in the first year of my college studies I got an enthusiasm(It was kind of all of a sudden) to be the best in studies in my class. I donot know where I got that from, and I didn't stop to think why I should do that. but I started putting full effort in getting that and I achieved that. I should say that my whole life changed after that. I was an average student till I got to college and here I am ranked 1st in my class. I then realised how much potential I had. I got a new confidence that I can do anything with lot of concentration and hard work.
Today I get lot of appreciation in my work place because I could do the work more efficiently and effectively. My new found confidence has helped me in every aspect of life.
I thank God lot of times for that 1 year in college. :-)
And it is nice to share it here.

I was always really loud and intense when I was younger. I thought my family was stupid and one dimensional until I started sneaking out of windows, and getting secret piercings, and coming back home with orange hair from punk shows, about a decade ago. Mom hung her head and said "This is my punishment isn't it, Mom?" and my Grandmother just laughed at Mom's agony.
I found out that year that I inherited a tremendous amount of backbone: my Gram was involved in the late flapper scene and she was at work and at the polls every chance she got. My Mom -- the personnel manager with a closet full of stupid Chanel skirt suits -- was a loud mouthy hippie. She skipped school and crashed her car into a grocery store once, and she always sneaked back home at night. Then there was me.
It put a lot of my attributes into perspective, and now I have a real edge on life, and a great head on my shoulders, and my Mother keeps telling me: "When you have children I will make them make your life hell." I don't doubt that she will. I don't mind becoming my Mother.

Moving out at the age of 16 or 17. I had to get a job, go to school, and still be responsible for a place to live, food, etc..

This is really a nun-ya, but I'll answer. My mother and my siblings. My mother made me responsible for my siblings when I was seven years old. I grew up fast!
