I need to report information on the reason why editors started using [SIC] in writings and what it means.

It means that in the original quote or citation there is a spelling error, so noted, but not corrected

SIC means "Intentionally so written"

What it means: an error in the writing is left intentionally (usually because the material is a direct quotation)
