This is a really tough question. Many defenders show a lot of World Class skill. I figure there are two types of defenders. Basic Defenders and Attacking defenders. Cannavaro, Puyol, Marquez, Terry, Roberto Carlos, Cafu, Sol Campbell, William Gallas, Rio Ferdinand, John Arne Riise, etc. are all top class defenders
Best Basic Defender: Cannavaro
Best Attacking Defender: Cafu
Best Overall Defender: Puyol

hahahah whoever said Materazzi I hope you are on acid or joking...
Based on the World Cup, Cannavaro was by far the best defender. But overall I think John Terry really is the best.

Lol whoever didnt say Cannavaro are dumb
It's either Nesta or Cannavaro who is the best defender in the world, Why do you think Cannavaro is captain of Italia? Coz he scores goals? No coz he defendz the best.

Corey Gibbs comes to mind, when he is healthy. I'm also a fan of Raphael Marquez. Not only is he tough in the back, but he can get forward as well.
