Hi,

There are a few reasons..

- Salty food intake
- Drinking not enough water so your body thinks there is not enough water and tries to hoard water
- weak kidneys
- Other chronic problems which have affected your kidneys..

THe best remedy is to cut down on saltish food and increase your intake of water. People have this misconception that when you have water retention, you should not drink water but all the more you should drink to let your body know you have enough water so tat it will flush out the excess...

It also helps if you can drink some good quality water. You can try filtered water from this water filter called KV6, it will break the water molecules into smaller particles so tat it is easily absorbed by the body and you will not risk water retention.. according to a friend who is a natural healer, the water from KV6 also contains healing properties...

If you would like to find out more.. pls email me at verityy@yahoo.com

Usually salt intake increases water retention in the body. Eat less salt and drink more water.

water retention can be due to many various causes. As noted in earlier answers dehydration and heart disease are common causes. Decreased profusion of renal arteries results in their releasing renin which starts a chemical cascade resulting in sodium retention. Water follows sodium so fluid levels increase. This increase in fluid levels builds up in your circulation, resulting in increased capillary filtration (which can cause edema or swelling) and increased blood pressure (due to the extra fluid forces). Unless you have a personal or family history of heart disease I would suggest you start by increasing water intake daily and wait for a change over the next few weeks. If that is not helpful, make an appointment and see your doctor. Diuretics are medications which allow for increased excretion of fluid.

Water retention is usually happens to those with high blood pressure. It is how the kidney regulates how much water should leave your body in urine and how much should retained. This process is affected by how your electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, etc...) are regulated by your kidney which affects the pressure in your veins and arteries, which will affect your blood flow to and from the heart and throughout your body. The only thing that helps are proper diagnosis from your doctor for high blood pressure and proper prescription medication for fluid or water pills (as the call it).

Water is retained in your body because you are not drinking enough water and your body feels deprived. What water you drink is stored because your body doesn't know the next time it will get a healthy drink. So essentiallly the key to getting rid of water retention is to drink more water so your body doesn't feel deprived and will release it when it is supposed to because it knows it will get more when needed.
