I have always just split everything in half no matter how big the bedrooms are. If you are intent on charging more for the bigger bedroom figure the square footage and charge by the foot. I think that you will probably be better off just splitting it evenly though.

Try this:
Your rent = Total Rent x [ (Area of your room) + (Shared Area) ] / [ (Area of roommate's room) + (Area of your room) + 2 x (Shared Area) ]
Example:
Your room = 5
Roommate's room = 6
Shared Area = 10
Total Rent = 1000
You pay : 1000 * (5 + 10) / (5 + 6 + 2*10) = 1000 * (15 / 31) = 483.87
Some of the previous calculations disregard the fact that there are space shared in the house. I think they should be included in the calculations, but that's just my opinion. (If there are no shared space, then just put 0 for shared area)

Like commercial buildings, you could charge by the square footage of each bedroom and assume common areas are shared evenly.
Example:
1,056 sq. ft. Bed 1: 11x12, Bed 2: 12x15 (48 sq ft. difference)
Rent $700 a month - "shared areas" - 774 sq ft. $256.50 each
Bed 1: additional $87 (total 343.5), Bed 2: additional $120 (376.5)
This assumes they will use the other parts of the apartment evenly. Don't get me started on sharing utilities and stuff (TV/etc.), that's a completely different thing. :P

I had the same situation. My friend wanted the bigger room because it also has a walkin closet. Whoever takes the bigger room will have to pay between $50-100 depending on the amount of the rent.

There is no calculating you decide it evenly Half and Half before you get into the apt. you decide who will have the bigger room. But its not about the room, Its all about Your saving each other from getting an apt. alone that would cost you double or triple of what your paying in sharing . You have electric, telephone, etc So this is something you have to agree on together. If the apt. was yours to begin with, then there's no talking about it. end of subject..

Charge the same unless one of them regularly has a date sleeping over. If you are one of the two, the only way you can justify taking the bigger at the same price is if the lease and utilities are in your name. You would have the greater headaches and deserve compensation.

Draw straws or play high card, and winner takes choice of bedroom and rent splits 50/50. You might put it in writing unless you totally trust your room mate.

by the square footage of the apartment/room divided into the number of days in the month will give you the amount to charge for the room by the day, which will then give you the amount to charge for the month
