Hi there,

i would like a new motherboard, and i would like an amd chip. My mate has mentioned to get a 939, but there are also 940 out now, which support ddr2 also. Is the 940/ddrs the wayt o go?

cheers

I would recommend any AM2 socket motherboard and cpu chip combination, but truly, go with Intel Core 2 Duo.
I myself am a huge AMD fan, i bought myself a FX-57, fastest single core FX chip out on the AMD line, but the Intel Core 2 Duos are much much faster, more powerful, dual core, and very very cheap!
Yes, you may think that AMD rocks, but so far, Intel has beat every last AMD cpu in every benchmark ever created.
the Intel Extreme X6800 at stock already has a Super PI (1m) score of 17s or below, my FX-57 at 3ghz with 2gbs of RAM can just reach 29, that is an extremely large difference

AM2 is the new socket so I would go with that, AMD is pretty good about supporting new sockets for a while like the 939. That is why I like AMD all you do is plug and play. I have the 939 and I will eventually upgrade to AM2, but Intel has the Duo Core Extreme right now and that smokes but is very pricey. It is a safe bet to say the counter to that will be in the AM2 socket.

I would also recommend the Intel Core 2 Duo line of processors, even though AMD had the advantage in the previous generation (Pentium 4, Pentium 4 Extreme, etc.), the new line of processors simply is cheap, power efficent, and very fast.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 will easily beat the FX-62 in almost every benchmark and plus you can overclock Core 2 Duo's easily so think of the performance there is in a $350 chip worth the FX-62 of $800.

HI! I think 939 is the best choice between those 2 but why not try the am2 sokcet? It supports almost any speed and has a reasonable price! Hope you make a good pc.

You want the AM2, it is the newer one and is the immediate future for AMD. However like the others I must recommend the Core 2 Duo's because they are the best out right now by far, and it will most likely be year at least before AMD catches up.

definitely go with the AM2 over a 939, if you got the cash...a awesome MB is the MSI K9N Platinum which is a great performer, good price and will fit pretty much any socket AMD puts out..I use the AM2 and it rocks hard

I would be the latest you can afford, your question was about a board though ?, if you have a processor already your limited to the amount of pins IT has, if your buying new (BOTH), try MAPLINS.co.uk, for 'bundle, both board and processor !
