Fear controls your life precisely to the extent that you allow it to. I don't think anyone can make an accurate generalization as to how much fear controls "our" lives. It varies enormously from individual to individual. Some people live their whole lives in fear, others of us experience it on such rare occasions that it simply isn't a part of our everyday experience or thinking.

Existential anxiety, the anxiety of existing, like #7 says, fear of not getting what you want, then if you get it, fear of losing it. Some of that can be dealt with by the way you think. The chemical released in your brain which results in thoughts and feelings of fear is related to conscience. Some fear is healthy. If I wasn't afraid of living at Godtel or under a bridge or with an abusive person I would probably never work or do much else productive. Fear is very motivating. But I think, in the BIG end, love and fear are opposites ends of the same thing. That's how I think to reduce my fear and anxiety.

Some people's lives are controlled by fear and some are not. I don't worry about most things that I have no control over. Also I educate myself as much as possible. I also play the game of odds. What are the odds that _______ will happen? The odds are very, very, slim that many things will ever happen in our lifetime. I hedge that bet by educating myself about alternatives in case of danger; I also PRAY. Not that things won't happen but I will be able to handle it or there will be others in my life who will help me in situations. People worry about too many things that the media brings up. I think it increases sales of products. Look at the West Nile Virus. Sales of mosquito clothing & insect repellant probably went through the roof for at least a couple of months. How many cases have we seen?

cant speak for anyone else, but as to me, i feel that fear is the driving force behind almost everything in life. Whats greed? few of being poor. Whats medicine driven by? Fear of death. I feel that if someone can take fear and instead of using it as a warning device to change something,, but use it instead as a driving force to make yourself better and experiance new things, then you ar ea better person for it. Do you run from a scary problem, or do you go into it head on?

It's not in our foremost thought every single day, but I think that fear is a major player in everyone's lives.

Some cling to religion to help with fears of an unknown afterlife.
Some stick to lousy jobs in fear of being unemployed.
Some stick with lousy spouses because they feel no one else will have them.

etcetera

Only as much as you let it do so.

See 2 Timothy 1:7 "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and love and a sound mind."

Since it is all in your head, it really is up to each individual. I don't like to swim because I almost drowned. But I will go because fear doesn't control me. Do what you are afraid of and it can't control you.
