you can get a processor that fits your socket if there is one available. No need to update the bios, that's part of the motherboard.

However, I'd suggest upgrading both.
The motherboard I have now is avaialble now for $32 and
the processor is $73
so for around $100 you can get both replaced with a 1 ghz FSB

you will not be able to go much higher. You can always update your bios, as long if the motherboard is supported or you can find the latest and greatest online.

If you want to get up to date with the dual core CPUs or just even Gigahertz CPU, then you will need a new motherboard.
