I have noticed what I think is underground yellow jackets and a pile of comb nest outside the hole. I can not find any information to explain this.

It is probably honey bees, but whatever it is be careful, they will swarm. I think something has been invading their hole. Lighter fluid poured into the hole and a match will do wonders

I actual have washed them out with a bucket of water in the previous and ran and the bees moved on. Yellow jackets at the instant are not harmfull and actual effective. Use the water and flow back for the honey yet once you had to kill them I actual have used the shop vac...positioned it there and that they are going to be sucked up by using the day. then you definitely can spray in the shop vac with computer virus killer.
