Cut to length, 45 the corners, locate the studs, use finish nails to attach to walls, sink the heads with a punch, fill in the holes with putty, prime, and paint. Or stain prior to install, find colored putty to match stain, but don't stain over the putty, it'll make it darker. You can paint the rail before hanging and touch the patched nail holes. Good luck

Are we forgeting a few things? Let`s determine the height of the rail. typically 32 to 42 inches off the floor. now are we just going to run the rail haphazardly around the room? No. We want it level and straight. If you don`t have access to a laser line level you can use a chalk line. Start at a corner and scribe a level using a 6ft. level, stretch chalk line across wall on the level line, snap line repeat process around the room. with any luck your lines should meet. install rail as previous answers suggested, but I would use a small bead of construction adhesive aon the lenght of the rail in addition to nailing.

I like kamenfire's answer. You can buy a cheap miter box and saw at Lowes, or discount tool store. Don't put nails too close to the inside corners or you will pull the mitered corners apart. About 12" is close enough. if the wall is crooked and the corners won't come together put a small shim between the offending rail and the wall, anything to hold it out. You need to find the studs to put the nails into. Locate one stud and measure either 12" or more likely 16" over for the next stud
