I don't think John needs promises - consider that he's been one of the busiest and most powerful men in the Gov. with multiple responsibilities since Labour regained power - he seems fireproof! Don't be fooled by the bumbling exterior - many Northern England Labour politicians present that image. It's only so you underestimate them.
Prescott's apparently unassailable position holds either because he is far more capable than his image suggests - sure to be true given the image - or Blair's scared of him because, metaphorically (I hope), he knows where Tony B's cupboarded skeletons are!
