tattoo is a puncture wound, made deep in your skin, that's filled with ink. It's made by penetrating your skin with a needle and injecting ink into the area, usually creating some sort of design. What makes tattoos so long-lasting is they're so deep — the ink isn't injected into the epidermis (the top layer of skin that you continue to produce and shed throughout your lifetime). Instead, the ink is injected into the dermis, which is the second, deeper layer of skin. Dermis cells are very stable, so the tattoo is practically permanent.
Tattoos used to be done manually — that is, the tattoo artist would puncture the skin with a needle and inject the ink by hand. Though this process is still used in some parts of the world, most tattoo shops use a tattoo machine these days. A tattoo machine is a handheld electric instrument that uses a tube and needle system. On one end is a sterilized needle, which is attached to tubes that contain ink. A foot switch is used to turn on the machine, which moves the needle in and out while driving the ink about 1/8 inch (about 3 millimeters) into your skin.
Most tattoo artists know how deep to drive the needle into your skin, but not going deep enough will produce a ragged tattoo, and going too deep can cause bleeding and intense pain. Getting a tattoo can take several hours, depending on the size and design chosen.

Tattoos permanently implant dye or pigment into the lower levels of your epidermis or skin. Normally you will not scar unless you pick at the scabs that form or you normally scar badly (develop Keloid scars that look like raised ropey red or purple scars) If you normally scar badly I would either get a very small tattoo in a private place to see if you will scar or not do it at all. You will not get skin cancer from tattoos and it is just an urban legend that tattoos explode during MRI exams.

Its an argument that could last forever. Could also depend on the tattoo also. If some one has a sleeve of naked ladies that is trying to work for a children's daycare... not going to happen. Some jobs don't care. Like security for night clubs... Kind of adds to the don't f with security attitude. Its something that is known prior to you getting the tattoo. Little by little as tattoos are becoming more main stream, we are seeing more and more places change their policies about folks with tats. Its not a quick change by any means, but it has started...

Tattoos are ink particles injected into the dermis of the skin. The dermis is the layer underneath the several layers of protective epidermis, and actually contains nerves and muscles.
ps. for all the people who said it is just underneath the skin, this is false. This is deeper than the skin and should be done by a professional.

If you get your tattoo done correctly by a professional, nothing really. It feels like your skin just that it is permanent paint on your body.

If done correctly, they do little more than leave ink in a pretty design under your skin.
If done wrong, they can leave scars or infections.
Go to a well known clean shop, make sure they use a clean needle, those little tiny cups for the ink, wears gloves and uses clean dressing when done.

Nothing. In the process of tattooing, ink is placed just beneath the skin. There it will stay, generally fading as time passes and depending on the quality of the ink/needle, skill of the artist, and genetics.
