Depends on your school. Most schools do give an increase in a students gpa for students taking honors or AP classes, but at my school, I get a higher class ranking. So, just depends but there are advantages to taking harder classes, besides the knowledge you will gain.

It can be. Some honors and advanced placement classes are graded out of 5 grade points rather than 4. So if you get an A, you can get a gpa greater than 4.0.
