Cause you don't have a secure connection ;) IE or Firefox both show when a page is encrypted and you can click the Lock to get more information on what kind of encryption and how safe it actually is. If you don't see one where it should be, then the page is not secure. But you should be able to look for a Page Info or View Page Info item in your menus (depending on the browser) to get more information on the page you're on.

To tell if you're on a secure page, there'll be an 's' after http. It looks like https://. This means it's a secure page. Whether or not you get an icon on the bottom of your screen, is another issue. But if the 's' is there, the lock icon should be too. If no 's', no lock icon.
