Its a fill in the blank to make the equations equal. for example if 2+7+blank = 10+7 than add 10+7 =17 than add 2+7=9 now 17-9=8 so blank =8 making the equation true so 2+7+8=10+7 both sides now equal 17 hope this helps.

you really should know how to answer this!
What you're saying is the left hand side has to equal the right hand side. There are two ways of doing this, intuitively or algebraically.
Intuition
1. work out each side
2+7+blank = 9 + blank = 10+7
10 + 7 = 17
so what number must be added to 9 to make it equal 17?
The answer is 8
Alegbriacally (replace blank with x)
2 + 7 + x = 10 + 7 (x is the value of blank - we don't know what it is)
so
9 + x = 17
- now make x the object. We must get rid of the 9 on the left hand side. But whatever we do to one side we must do to the other.
So to get rid of 9 we must subtract 9 from the left hand side (but we must also subtract 9 from the right hand side)
9 + x - 9 = 17 - 9
x = 8
thus the blank is simply equal to 8
Try this
10 + blank = 23 - 2
10 + x = 21
10 + x - 10 = 21 - 10
(10 - 10) + x = 11
0 + x = 11
x = 11
Try this
10*blank +50 = 150
10*x + 50 = 150
1. make x the object - get rid of the 50
10*x + 50 -50 = 150 -50
10*x +(50-50) = 100
10*x = 100
2. get rid of the 10. how? Divide Left hand side by 10
10*x/10 = 100/10 (you must do same to other side)
(10/10)*x = 10
(1)*x = 10
x = 10
