Yes there is, when a family can't afford the services for a funeral they will usually set up a charity and it will be mentioned in the obituary. If you haven't heard of one then there is no need to make a donation.

Donations are an alternative for people, especially those who don't like sending flowers, to show respect and/or honor the passing of someone.

It's never expected though.

Often donations would go to a charity or non-profit organization, often the donor's choice.

No it is not. That's a vulgar thing to do. If you want to financially help the bereaved, mail them the donation with a sympathy card.
