Substance Abuse. Cocaine or heavy marijuana use appears to temporarily reduce the number and quality of sperm by as much as 50%. Sperm actually have receptors for certain compounds in marijuana that resemble natural substances and which may impair the sperm's ability to swim and may also inhibit their ability to penetrate the egg. (Alcohol itself does not appear to affect fertility unless it is so abused that it causes liver changes.)
Smoking. Smoking impairs sperm motility, reduces sperm lifespan, and may cause genetic changes that affect the offspring. Additionally, a 1999 study found that men who smoke have lower sex drives and less frequent sex.

If you are planning on trying to use marijuana as a form of birth control, DON"T, it won't work. Yes, marijuana and regular tobacco cigarettes can lower your sperm count, but not enough to make you sterile. You CAN still impregnate someone. If you don't want children at all look into a vasectomy(if you're 21 or have a child you qualify). It's an easy procedure and it won't make you any less of a man.
If you are asking this question because you smoke and you and your significant other are trying to conceive, I'm sorry to have misread your question. As I said before, it does lower your sperm count so it may be harder to conceive, but it is still possible.

Smoking marijuana makes sperm less fertile, men who smoke marijuana do get women pregnant. But some men are more fertile than others, or are more fertile at different times of their lives. Smoking marijuana, will make a borderline-infertile man frankly infertile. I know about this first hand because my husband use to smoke too, and when he was smoking I couldnt get pregnant. He stopped and it only took about 3 months for me to get pregnant. And by the way, my children are all normal HEALTHY, happy beautiful kids, they were not born druggies they were not born with abnormalities of any kind. I know its hard, but I bet your man is easier to deal with!! LOL Good Luck

To echo another woman's response, my boyfriend too was a BIG stoner...and is now the father of three kids. He still smokes and hasn't ever quit. It can lower sperm count, but I know first hand that's no garantee.
